Viable Home Based Business

When you decide to start a legitimate home based business naturally you want it to be profitable and also flexible. You need the flexibility for a few reasons. A home business should not be drudgery like a job; so that you can have ‘wiggle room’ to allow you to live in an atmosphere of relaxed freedom; and you will also be more available to your family rain or shine.

earn income staying home

There are a few ‘niches’ you can choose to work from home and it might as well be something you are interested in, or has some other attraction, since it is your choice. You can sell products for companies online and produce a profit right from your home. The products can be ordered online with you receiving a percentage of the proceeds just for inexpensive advertising; or you can be responsible for shipping the ordered product to the recipient if you want to be totally independent (and keep the change).

Childcare is another legitimate home based business. This business can be conducted from your home. It is actually quite efficient if you have your own children – why not add a few more that pay? There may be required safety inspection and other legal matters to implement first. Your business can serve two purposes. One is to provide childcare for those who need it. The other purpose is to provide income to a home based business like yours.

Do you like to cook? Another legitimate home business that can thrive in today’s world is a catering business. Providing home cooked meals to working people can be very nice as you can choose how many meals you can handle in a day. Do as much as you can, no more no less if possible. The profits can be pretty good and they are saying in some towns it is actually cheaper to have a catered meal than to shop at the supermarket. (Not to mention all the work). This can be such a good thing for the family receiving the meals as they have more time to spend with each other and less stress.

A cleaning service can be profitable and it is one of the easiest services to sell. Just mention ‘I clean houses’ in a conversation and you will have people begging for either one-time archeological digs or weekly maintenance. Again this service is such a help to the busy professional, freeing up their time and creating an atmosphere of well-being.

Another service you can offer either alone or in tandem with one of the others is a laundry service. The laundry can be dropped off at your home, processed and picked up when the person gets off from work. This is another time saving necessity that is performed by the home worker for the busy professional who does not have the time to complete it. Improve your life with the extra money you will earn at the same time as helping someone else.

The Early Bird Gets the Best Ideas

They say that our most creative time is first thing in the morning. We can also supposedly retain information best at this time. Obviously if we have rested sufficiently, then we have the maximum amount of energy we will have for the day when we wake up, (allowing time to stumble around a little and make coffee first).

get the best ideas!

While it is true one of the biggest selling points for a home based business is how we can control our time – work when we want to – stop when we want to, etc. If at all possible we should get things done early when we have the most energy and are thinking clearer. If we constantly put things off they will become as if they are low-priority in our minds, and we will possibly begin to sluff them off if we are tired, etc.

This goes together with the problem of being your own boss and not being accountable to anyone but yourself. Well you are accountable to your customers and anybody you are working with, but this seems pretty flexible in the home business world. It is too easy to tell yourself you will do it later, or tomorrow and then either never do it (forget it) or do a poor job because you are tired or preoccupied and/or now need to rush because you have waited until the last minute.

Make no mistake, having a business needs to be taken seriously if we want to succeed. It has to be a number one priority whether it is part-time or full-time. We will have flexibility as part of the beauty of working from home for ourselves. That is IF there is something special you need to do or somewhere you need to go, you can always juggle things around so you can get everything done that is necessary.

As with anything there is great diversity among people. There are some that are ‘night people’. Those that work better at night or really get going by dark. Of course for these folks they should do whatever works for them. Part of the beauty with a home business is things are not rigidly controlled by hours such as 9 to 5, where we have 8-hours to cut it or not. Naturally if you get behind it will begin to ‘catch up with you’ and your job performance will suffer.

When you are able to look at the clock as 24-hours you have so much more time to do everything. So you are really quite free when you work for yourself to do a few hours of work here and there. The point is to get it all done efficiently and timely most of the time. The other point is every waking hour shouldn’t be spent glued to your computer or enslaved by your business. There has to be balance in everything. Enough work, enough rest, enough play. It is only when we have this balance that we can really thrive and excel.

Don’t Let Your Home Based Business Be a Time Trap

The reasons people express for wanting to work from home are many and varied, but most home based business owners cite the ability to set their own hours as a major factor in their decision to work at home. However, many people that have work at home businesses often fall into a trap that flies directly in the face of their stated desire for time flexibility.

escape from the office!

The strong growth in home based business activity continues and according to the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, fifty-two percent of ALL small businesses are home-based. Some home based business owners have been known to become “workaholics” because their office is so accessible. Don’t become a slave to your business…get out of your home office regularly to renew and revitalize yourself.

Close the door to your office or otherwise remove yourself from your designated “work area” and go into your “home” area to live your personal life. If your business involves the use of the telephone and you find it difficult to ignore a ringing phone in the office, simply turn the ringer off and turn the volume on the answering machine way down. If your business is Internet based, just turn off your computer (or at least get away from the monitor and keyboard).

As a work at home business entrepreneur, you certainly aren’t required to be available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week just because your business is located in your home. After all, your office or workspace is just an area in your home…it’s not your home itself! Working and living under the same roof has a host of advantages, but it can present some challenges (in addition to the workaholic syndrome mentioned, above) and stress factors.

Here are four ways to create a less stressful home business environment:

-Remember why you wanted to become involved with a home-based business (i.e. more time for family, work schedule flexibility, etc.)

-Have discussions with your family members and get their input about the working arrangements and the amount of time they want with you.

-Use good time management techniques. Keep a list of tasks by order of importance. There are many low cost and effective “day planners” or “organizers” readily available today.

-ALWAYS take a little time to “smell the roses”.

-While not experiencing the negatives common to a corporate office working environment, the home-based business owner may occasionally experience stresses and frustrations that are unique to working at home.Networking with other home-based and small business owners provides an opportunity to connect with others who may be experiencing the same stresses/frustrations that you are. Sharing stressful and/or frustrating issues with someone else in the same situation can relieve your stress and may bring you good advice from a different point of view.
