Your Primary Tools for a Home Business Start-Up

‘Tools’ are the same as resources. Resources can be for example, time, money and skills. Starting a business online definitely requires a willingness to learn and a strong determination to succeed.

Internet Marketing Toolbox

Writing appears to be the most important skill for Internet marketing. So many applications where you need it, whether it is writing to communicate with peers, prospects and customers, blogging, and creating ads. Publishing content is of major importance. If writing is an insurmountable challenge, then there are services that you can use for ghostwriting and copyrighting that will get you through it, however with some expense.

It would be much more natural and inexpensive if you were to force yourself to accomplish something that is out of your comfort zone. You need to have the motivation to do something challenging and maybe not your favorite task if you really want to have a successful Internet business.

To make it real simple, writing is related to reading and it is related to talking. It is very much related to thinking. It is likely that you can do of these things to some degree.

So just start typing! Describe what you are thinking, what you have read, and what it means to you. Then keep adding to that as you build an email or blog. Think of all the good things about your product and just write them all down.

‘Brainstorming’ is one technique of huge value to anybody trying to write. Brainstorming is where you just let your thoughts flow freely and start listing them. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar. You can clean it up later. Just get the thought out so you can see it. You can keep it as a list that you refer to when you are trying to think of something to write about. You can start new ones anytime. The idea is to keep it simple and plain so that it can help you put thoughts into words.

There really is a condition known as ‘writer’s block’ even for people who are comfortable with writing. It is more about not having ideas to write about. With business online you are fortunate that there is a vast sea of information available to anyone that you can use to create an idea to write about.

Keyword research is where you would start another list to refer to when trying to put an article or ad together. Make a list of relevant terms used in your niche to start with. For example in the home business niche, there are keywords such as working at home, make money online, affiliate marketing, business opportunities, home-based business. List each one and give yourself several blank lines under each one.

Then go to a free keyword research tool website (just type ‘keyword research’ in a search engine query) to find several resources. Some will even show you the competition. Type your keywords and look them up to get more terms that include those concepts. What you are doing is building more keyword phrases based on those root keywords. For example, “working at home” – ‘working at home earning money’, ‘make a profit working at home online’, ‘start a home-based business working online’.

These longer keyword phrases are sometimes referred to as ‘long tail keywords’ in SEO (search engine optimization). They should not be over-used – maybe 1 or 2 times in an average 500 word article, (*1-page) including the subject or title (this one is 611). ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’ and this will work a lot better for you than telling yourself ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t know how’ or ‘I’m new’. You have to try! “Just DO it”.

Where to Begin If You Are Thinking of Starting a Business Online

To begin with, you need a real plan — a plan that would organize resources that you have to invest, as far as money, time and skills. Even if you have very few resources you can still start a business on the Internet. If you are determined, there are ways to make up for anything you feel you need but do not feel strong about.

Get started!

If you have no money to work with then start to save a few dollars whenever you get money. You will be surprised that even a little bit of ‘spare change’ will add up if you don’t spend it. It is also a good thing when planning to take stock of what you spend your money on. If you are really committed to having your own business at home, you can make some small sacrifices as far as things in your life that are not essentials, for example – entertainment, trips, and luxuries.

You can be direct and for example when you would normally pay for tickets to an event, take that amount and put it away in a savings account for your business operating expenses. You can also help yourself to motivate your saving, figure how much gas you saved and the bridge tolls, etc. and put that away in savings too.

Time is a major concern especially if you have no money. You will need to spend more time researching and working in performing tasks for yourself. You can always learn how to do things if you feel you don’t have strong enough skills when you come to the table.

Rest assured though that you have access to major important, free resources, rich or poor. Search engines like are where almost anything you ask under the sun will be answered within minutes. It may take some time to go through all the results you get though, to decide on the best.

There are free courses online at organizations like This is technical and provides just enough information that you can learn how to maintain and even build websites. There are also community colleges online where you can take excellent courses for just a few dollars and you can do it whenever you have free time.

Determination and sacrifice are key ‘skills’ that you need. After working all day, commuting, and family responsibilities, devoting yourself to starting a business may take your last ounce of strength! Many do it and it is very gratifying for them to know they have taken control of their own lives.

Help Needed! Starting a Business Online

Our society wants instant gratification with everything. The faster we go, the more we want it to move faster. Give us ‘quick’ or ‘instant’, and we want ‘ready-made’.

Some ‘pre-fab’ things work well and there is a real benefit saving time and money buying something that is all put together for you. It depends on the context. For a business there are things that may be too complicated for most. That alone is a good reason to find tools that can give us a head-start such as the Internet’s infamous ‘Business in a Box’.

If learning a programming language was required, well we just wouldn’t or we would believe we couldn’t. Too far out (technical)? This would prevent us from having a website or starting a business online in many cases. At least it would be the case if we had to take a time out for a few years to learn the language and get some hands-on experience. This would be more likely if the business was to be technical. If you just want to market opportunities and products online you really don’t need that level of skill at all.

People are not necessarily lazy. More so, it is usually just that some people can relate to technical things and some don’t. There is nothing wrong with that. We are all different. It is just that we should know our limitations as well as we know our likes and dislikes. If you are building your own business this is the time to make it what you enjoy and could do well.

There are several resources we could use to accomplish what we need. There are web design companies to create a website and some web pages for us, but this can be expensive or cheesy looking. Don’t be fooled by ‘really free’ website built ads on TV that are laughable. They make that point “really free not funny free”. Yes, really free to build it.

However don’t forget to mention that they charge a maintenance fee each month (average $100 a month). This may include some basic marketing and content that might be the right thing for you if you can afford it and have little time to invest.

If you have few technical inclinations and no desire to cultivate the skills, we can go the almost free way. We could build a website on a blogging platform. All we need there is hosting and a domain name which really are very inexpensive. You want to do some research on hosting though, as far as reliability and security, as the host is really what keeps your website running and displayed online where potential customers can see it.

The blogging platforms usually have a number of free themes you can choose from. You may start to customize it for your purposes. (Note that not all themes can be changed so pick one that can be if that is what you want).

If you can’t even afford almost free, there is a blogging platform where you don’t even need a domain or host. The drawback is that the design options are limited, and you will have a sub-domain which is not as professional as a top-level domain. In fact it screams ‘I am a flat-broke newbie’. No big deal everybody had to start somewhere, but it may turn a few ‘savvy’ individuals away.
